What's inside

The Credit Readiness Checklist is a free nine-page workbook you can download, print, and work through at your own pace. It covers a full credit report review, a mortgage readiness checklist, a business funding readiness checklist, a credit monitoring action plan, and a next-step worksheet to help you organize what you find. It's a review tool, not a scorecard — there's no pass or fail, just a clearer picture of where things stand today.

The five sections of the Credit Readiness Checklist: credit report review, mortgage readiness, business funding readiness, credit monitoring action plan, and the next-step worksheet
Five sections, one workbook — start with the one that matches what you're preparing for.

How to use this checklist

Step 1. Start with your free Credit Snapshot for personal credit readiness — a two-minute, no-card, no-obligation educational baseline of where your credit stands today. Step 2. If you're preparing for business funding instead, use the Business Funding Snapshot path rather than the personal Credit Snapshot — business funding is reviewed differently. Step 3. Review each section of the workbook that applies to your situation, and write down issues, questions, and next steps as you go using the blank lines and the worksheet at the end.

Which snapshot should you use? Personal credit, mortgage, auto loans, and general review → Credit Snapshot. Business funding → Business Funding Snapshot only. The checklist keeps these separate throughout.

Credit report review checklist

Your credit report is the source document behind every score and every lending decision, so the workbook starts here. It walks through personal information, open accounts, closed accounts, balances, payment history, collections, charge-offs, hard inquiries, and possible errors — one section at a time, with room to note what you find. If you want the full field-by-field walkthrough first, see how to read your credit report, and if something looks wrong, how to dispute an error on your credit report covers what comes next.

Mortgage readiness checklist

Lenders review more than a single number. This section covers your current score range, recent late payments, collections or charge-offs, debt-to-income concerns, recent new accounts, disputes that may affect underwriting, and your timeline before applying. For more background, see should you improve your credit before applying for a mortgage and the Home Buying & Credit Resource Center.

Business funding readiness checklist

Business funding decisions weigh both personal and business factors: personal credit review, business bank account, EIN/entity setup, revenue documentation, existing debt, business credit profile, and personal guarantee awareness. This section of the workbook pairs with the Business Funding Snapshot only — see how to prepare your business before applying for funding for the full picture.

Preparing for business funding? Use the Business Funding Snapshot, not the personal Credit Snapshot.

Credit monitoring action plan

Monitoring turns credit review into an ongoing habit instead of a once-a-year event. The workbook covers what to monitor monthly, which alerts matter, when to review before applying, and how monitoring supports preparation without changing what's actually on your file. Next-step worksheet

The final page of the workbook is a simple worksheet to capture your top three credit issues to review, top three funding or mortgage questions, documents to gather, your timeline before applying, and which snapshot to use — Credit Snapshot or Funding Snapshot. It's meant to turn the review into a short, concrete action list.
